Our Sojourn on the Vineyard

Our time on Martha's Vineyard was delightful. We used our bikes to tour the island and saw most of the sights to be seen. The beaches are plentiful and well used by everyone! On our first bike adventure, we left Vineyard Haven and headed to the east of the harbour to the East Chop lighthouse - the drive was beautiful as were the many homes we passed. From there, we cycled through the town of Oak Bluffs and along the long coastal boardwalk into Edgartown, passing a 4 mile long beach! We cycled cross island from Edgartown back to Vineyard Haven. We noted the distance the next day in our various appendages!! We never did go to the West Chop lighthouse, which resides on the west side of the harbour.

We took a day off from cycling the next day, working around the boat and enjoying the marina. Although we did not cross paths with any celebrities, we noted that during our time on Martha's Vineyard the likes of Don Cheadle, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, Uzo Aduba, amongst others were on the island attending the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival at the local high school. Apparently none of them arrived on any of the boats at our marina!

Our final full day on the Vineyard was spent cycling back to Edgartown and on to Chappaquiddick Island. We did stop at a cycle shop and purchased padded seat covers for the bicycles - a game changer!! Again, the scenery was beaches and greenery. The whole island is set up for cycling - if HRM had the same level of cycling paths (quality, number) we would do more of this activity at home. We had to take a car ferry to access Chappaquiddick island - that took all of about 2 minutes to complete the crossing. Although many people choose to live on Chappaquiddick, there is NOTHING there of a commercial persuasion - no stores, no nothing! People must return via the ferry to Edgartown to complete any shopping requirements. However, Chappaquiddick is quiet, quaint and restful.

Some photos - the car ferry wharf, a beach club with cabanas, the harbour (a few shots of it), a nest of osprey, and a quirky sign - Be Happy on Chappy! How could you not be!

We spent our last evening on Martha's Vineyard at Garde East, the marina restaurant, celebrating another successful day of cycling and our 45th wedding anniversary. Our servers (Ari and Kinnear) ensured a fun evening as the end to a great day!

Our view from the restaurant.

The next morning we said good-bye to Martha's Vineyard, and set our course for Montauk!
